[teqc] helpful tip of week 1980

This week's tip: thing #1 allowed in RINEX that you should avoid ...

... or at least not count on. (A few subsequent tips of the week will
cover other "features" of RINEX that you should avoid or not count on.)

1) Transit doppler. "What's that?" you ask. Transit, or its full name
of Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS) Transit, was the immediate
predecessor of the Navstar GPS system. Like GPS, it was operated by
the U.S. Department of Defense, but consisted of only 6-10 satellites,
3-5 of those providing navigation service and 3-5 more acting as in-orbit
spares. They were in near-circular LEO polar orbits approximately 1075 km
above the Earth (with an orbital period of 1h 46m, or about 27 orbits every
2 sidereal days) and transmitted phase modulated navigation signals at
150 and 400 MHz. The Transit system started service in 1964 and
ceased service in 1996; any signals from a Transit SV after 31 Dec 1996
should not be used for timing or position.

Thus, operational Transit overlapped with the beginnings of RINEX in the
late '80s and, because Transit was an early timing and position system, there
were observables defined for it in RINEX prior to RINEX 2.11, e.g. in 2.10:
ftp://igs.org/pub/data/format/rinex210.txt The SV identifier in RINEX was
'T' (analogous to 'G' for GPS), so I guess one could have had T01 - T10
for the Transit SVs. The Transit observables were the integrated doppler
on 150 MHz, T1, and on 500 MHz, T2 (thus analogous to D1 and D2 for GPS
doppler).

But, I never saw a single RINEX file with Transit data. All of these
details for Transit kept being dragged forward with updates to the RINEX
specification, until for 2.11 I finally convinced Werner Gurtner to remove
Transit altogether, i.e. in ftp://igs.org/pub/data/format/rinex211.txt:

--------
The definition of observations for Transit Doppler is obsolete and has been
removed from Version 2.11
--------

If you ever find an early (pre-2.11) RINEX file with Transit, I doubt very
much there is a single current piece of software out there that can do anything
with it, and such a file will probably make just about every processing engine
very unhappy. Note: old teqc versions allowed for Transit data to be present
in RINEX, but all of that was removed 26 Feb 2007 to ramp teqc up for 2.11
around that time, so versions after that date will complain if they encounter
Transit data.

Happy teqc-ing!

cheers,
--lou
