This week's tip: GLONASS signals

The 'tip of the week 1993' https://postal.unavco.org/pipermail/teqc/2018/002453.html
gave some information on the legacy GLONASS signals. This tip, hopefully, will help
with more understanding of those signals and with what is now being broadcast with
two GLONASS-K SVs.

To summarize again, the legacy GLONASS signals are FDMA (frequency-division multiple
access) and the carrier frequencies G1 and G2 depend on a frequency channel number
(fcn) for each SV. The fcn is the same for G1 and G2 on each SV, but the fcn
values are not unique for the entire GLONASS constellation:

    G1 = 1602.00 MHz + fcn * 9/16 MHz
    G1 = 1246.00 MHz + fcn * 7/16 MHz

where the ranges of fcn values have changed over time:

     0 to 24 from 1982 to 1998,
     0 to 13 from 1998 to 2005,
    -7 to  6 from 2005 to present.

Further, the legacy signals have "standard accuracy" (SA) and "high accuracy" (HA)
components. Very approximately speaking, you can make the following analogies with
GPS CDMA (code-division multiple access) signals:

   FDMA G1SA ~ GPS CDMA L1C/A  - RINEX 2: pseudorange stored in 'C1', phase stored in 'L1'
   FDMA G2SA ~ GPS CDMA L2C    - RINEX 2: pseudorange stored in 'C2', phase stored in 'L2'
   FDMA G1HA ~ GPS CDMA L1P(Y) - RINEX 2: pseudorange stored in 'P1', phase stored in 'L1'
   FDMA G2HA ~ GPS CDMA L2P(Y) - RINEX 2: pseudorange stored in 'P2', phase stored in 'L2'

... although keep in mind that the CDMA carrier frequencies are:

    GPS,SBAS,QZSS L1 = 1575.42 MHz
    GPS,QZSS      L2 = 1227.60 MHz

(The binning of the legacy GLONASS observables in the same-named RINEX observables as
legacy GPS observables was for convenience, not to show equivalence.) Also, the GLONASS
HA signals are more akin to the unencrypted (anti-spoofing off) GPS P-code signals
rather than the now almost ubiquitous encrypted (anti-spoofing on) GPS Y-code signals
(i.e. anti-spoofing off on a GPS SV now only showing up occasionally for a short time,
maybe during a test).

For GLONASS-K SVs (of which there are currently two SVs: #702, which is "in operation",
and #701, which is in "flight tests"; see https://www.glonass-iac.ru/en/GLONASS/), there
is also the new CDMA G3 signal being broadcast, with a carrier frequency of:

    G3 = 1202.025 MHz

This carrier frequency is in between the GPS/SBAS L2 and L5 carrier frequencies, where:

    GPS,SBAS,QZSS L5 and Galileo E5a = 1176.45 MHz

with all the signals on the 1176.45 MHz carrier frequency also being CDMA.

Remember that you can create "extended" RINEX 2.11 with teqc (e.g. see
https://postal.unavco.org/pipermail/teqc/2013/001492.html), using the '-extend'
option, and then qc it to examine GLONASS-K G3 data. (Note the '-extend' option
is only needed to create, i.e. output, extended RINEX 2.11. Once you have extended
RINEX 2.11, teqc will read it without the '-extend' option.)

Happy teqc-ing!

cheers,
--lou
