Discovery Channel will show the Yellowstone Supervolcano docudrama followed by a documentary on the science of the Yellowstone volcanic and earthquake system, Sunday evening, April 10.

The docu-drama is a portrayal of a very rare and not imminent geologic event, i.e. described as what would happen during the "worst case" volcanic eruption at Yellowstone National Park -- a cataclysmic caldera eruption like those that happened at Yellowstone approximately 2 million, 1.2 million and 640,000 years ago. Smith notes this is a highly unlikely event.

Bob Smith, professor at the University of Utah and a Coordinating Scientist of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, was an adviser to the British Broadcasting Corp. and Discovery Channel who produced these products.

A question and answer document about volcanic eruptions and earthquakes at Yellowstone is posted on the website of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory at the following web address.

A new U.S. Geological Survey fact sheet on Yellowstone --including information on past catastrophic caldera eruptions and the prospect for such eruptions in the future, may be found at:
