The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Postdoctoral Scholars
Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applications for
a postdoctoral research position in JPL’s Solid Earth Research Group.
We seek a motivated person with experience in 3D viscoelastic finite
element modeling of earthquake and tectonic deformation processes. The
position involves integrating time variable surface deformation
observations from GPS and InSAR into fault and lithospheric models for
earthquake/transient slip and stress interactions. The position
involves working with a team of JPL scientists and engineers as part of
a larger project.
Dr. Paul Lundgren, Research Scientist, in JPL’s Earth Sciences
Section will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor to the selected
candidate. The appointee will be guided by the JPL advisor to ensure
that the research work will result in publications in the open
literature.
Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in geophysics, applied physics
or engineering with a strong background in numerical continuum
mechanics modeling. Experience in earthquake mechanics and/or
lithospheric deformation modeling is highly desirable. The appointment
is contingent upon evidence of completion of a Ph.D.
The annual starting salary for a recent Ph.D. is US$52,000 and can
vary somewhat according to the applicant’s qualifications.
Postdoctoral scholars positions are awarded for a one-year period.
Appointments may be renewed in one-year increments for a maximum
addition of two years. The appointments are expected to begin in spring
of 2007.
Please send a letter describing your research interests, a curriculum
vitae, and a list of three references (with telephone numbers and
postal and e-mail addresses) to Dr. Paul Lundgren, Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, MS 300-233 , 4800 Oak Grove Dr., Pasadena, CA 91109-8099
USA; Tel: +1-818-354-1795 or E-mail: paul.lundgren at jpl.nasa.gov
Applications will be reviewed starting in January 2007.
Caltech and JPL are equal opportunity/affirmative action employers.
Women, minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to
apply.
