To the UNAVCO Community,

UNAVCO will be participating in the "Great Southern California
ShakeOut" earthquake simulation on November 13th at 10 a.m. This is a
drill based on a plausible, southern San Andreas Mw=7.8 earthquake
scenario. 5 million people are expected to participate by simulating
their actions and response plans for such an earthquake, through
schools, hospitals, utilities, businesses, and emergency management
organizations. The scenario and simulation are described at http://www.ShakeOut.org/

When Ken Hudnut invited UNAVCO to participate in ShakeOut last summer,
this seemed to be a really good opportunity to draft a revision to
UNAVCO's Event Response Policy and to revise and update internal
procedures, communication pathways, and response staging in
anticipation of a real event.

You can help us by thinking through the UNAVCO support that you would
request following an actual M7.8 earthquake on the southern San
Andreas fault, and actually requesting that support in response to the
simulation on Thursday November 13.

Available hardware, data, and services include:

- High-rate GPS data and other special data sets from PBO and other
permanent GPS stations archived at UNAVCO
- Campaign GPS Systems and/or Field Engineer Support
- Terrestrial and Airborne LiDAR hardware, data acquisition support
and coordination, and data sets
- InSAR data sets and satellite tasking
- Laser strain meter, borehole strain meter, tilt meter and borehole
seismometer data sets
- Planning, permitting and installation of new permanent GPS stations
- Education and Outreach Support
- General event information

The policy calls for us to identify an Event Coordinator. In
anticipation of ShakeOut, Freddy Blume will be the Event Coordinator
and will be handling requests and disseminating information through a
discussion forum:

Please contact <blume at unavco.org>, 303-381-7474 for any additional

Stay tuned to the UNAVCO home page for additional information
immediately following the event at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

We look forward to hearing from you then!
