UNAVCO community members,

The UNAVCO community lost a good friend and colleague on Friday August 7 when Paul Silver was killed with his daughter in an automobile accident. Paul was well known for his infectious goodwill and for his creativity and vision as a scientist. Paul was driven by two academic passions - to understand the early evolution of the earth and to "solve the earthquake problem ". These passions followed on his early career as a jazz drummer.

Trained as a seismologist, Paul also considered himself a card carrying geologist. His gift for observational science also led to contributions in geodesy, and a vision for the important role of strain meters in integrated geophysical data sets. For UNAVCO, perhaps his biggest contribution to geodesy was in his tireless advocacy and advancement of EarthScope, and the Plate Boundary Observatory. This project played a special role in UNAVCO's history, leading to its current realization as an independent university consortium. Further, Paul served as board chair and was an instrumental member of the EarthScope Management Team during much of PBO construction.

We will remember Paul always for his leadership, creativity, and his science contributions, but also for his friendship, wit, good humor, and passion.
