The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa, Canada,
invites applications for MSc or PhD positions in Seismology and
Geophysics. Possible projects include:

Seismo-tectonics of the northern Canadian Cordillera: The northern
Cordillera (encompassing the Yukon and Northwest Territories) is one
of the most seismically active region in North America and yet its
tectonic deformation is poorly understood due to the lack of
instrument coverage in this area. This project is designed to study
the regional scale structure and seismic activity of the Cordillera
using seismic data. Field work (installation of seismic stations) in
the Yukon and Northwest Territories is expected to take place within
the duration of the project.

Seismic structure of plate boundary zones: Major plate boundaries
(e.g., continental transform faults and subduction zones) are the
sites of destructive earthquakes. Resolving fine-scale structures as
well as their temporal changes in the vicinity of plate boundary
faults has the potential to improve our understanding of fault
processes. This project is designed to study one or more plate
boundary zone using available seismic data. A wide variety of
techniques will be used and developed to obtain information at
different time and space scales.

We encourage highly motivated students with a strong background in a
quantitative science (e.g., geophysics, physics, applied mathematics,
computer science, engineering) to apply.

Deadline for application is June 30, 2012 (or until the position is
filled) and the starting date is September of 2012. Interested
students should contact Professor Pascal Audet
(pascal.audet at uottawa.ca) and include a CV, transcripts, list of
publications/thesis (if available), and contact information for at
least 2 references.
