UNAVCO External Affairs Specialist

 Position Announcement

UNAVCO invites applications for the position of External Affairs Specialist to coordinate UNAVCO efforts in:

Establishing international partnerships for geodetic research, data management and sharing, and mutual capacity building,
Developing effective information conduits to policymakers and the scientifically curious public, and
Working with internal and external constituencies to ensure a web presence that supports these efforts.

The successful candidate will shape a new program to advance these goals in close collaboration with UNAVCO stakeholders. This position is based at UNAVCO’s main offices in Boulder, Colorado.

Under the direction of the President, the External Affairs Specialist develops international collaborations and proposals to strengthen global geodesy and to advance international capacity building initiatives; works directly with public officials, with government relations offices of member universities, and partner organizations to inform public policy; and with UNAVCO staff to support our web presence.

Candidates must have conducted graduate studies in geosciences, science or public policy, or closely related field; have expert spoken and written communication skills; and the ability to manage diverse staff and hybrid funding sources in a highly collaborative and fast-paced working environment. Experience in science support and/or federal policy, such as a congressional or government fellowship with AAAS or AGU preferred.

A formal position description is posted below.

UNAVCO Information

UNAVCO is a university-governed consortium that is uniquely positioned to advance and support the geodetic community's scientific goals. UNAVCO has 101 US academic members, as well as 72 associate members that share its mission and benefit from its programs and services. Before incorporation in 2001, UNAVCO existed for nearly two decades as the University Navstar Consortium, primarily serving geophysicists and geodesists who study tectonic deformation using high-precision GPS technology. Over the past decade, UNAVCO’s scope has expanded significantly, serving new science communities – including those who focus on the deformation of ice sheets and glaciers; Earth’s response to ground water, sea level change, and other aspects of the hydrosphere; and imaging the structure of the atmosphere.
