Job Announcement: Systems Administrator III/Lead
UNAVCO, a non-profit membership-governed consortium, facilitates geoscience research and education using geodesy. 
For nearly three decades, UNAVCO has spearheaded the utilization of cutting-edge technology while providing robust operational support for researchers exploring tectonics (earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics), the deformation of ice, the Earth's response to ground water, sea level, and aspects of the hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The UNAVCO Community uses high-precision GPS, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) for Airborne Laser Swath Mapping and Terrestrial Laser Scanning,  InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar),  and more.  We host the NSF’s Geodesy Data Archive and provide cyberinfrastructure to support the full data life cycle and interoperability with national and international Earth science Data Centers.

Summary of Job
The Technical Lead provides strategic vision, network engineering, data center management, and security policy management for UNAVCO. Provide system administration and end user support for Program Support, the President’s Office, and Education and Outreach departments.
Working Relationships
Internal:  Receives general guidance on IT policy and priorities and builds annual and quarterly plans based upon guidance.  Reports results and gathers input on priorities from senior management team to support cross-team deliverables and projects. Leads team and drives accomplishment of objectives. This position may require formal supervisory responsibilities. These include recruitment, orientation, assignment and oversight of work, approval of time reporting, leave and schedule, performance evaluation, oversight of professional development and health/safety training , resolution or referral of concerns and complaints, disciplinary action, and employee check-out.   Supervisors keep personnel matters strictly confidential within their supervisory line and in consultation with Human Resources.   Ongoing training and professional development is required of supervisors to address evolving best practices, changes in the compliance landscape, and support of UNAVCO diversity goals.  
External:  Works with various IT suppliers, vendors for data center, building security, etc. Is responsible for internet service stability and coordinating with various entities on behalf of UNAVCO.  Frequently gathers information from service providers, publications and other sources to advise management on trends and emerging technology issues.
Essential Job Functions
•       Coordinate standardization of IT systems across all departments in the organization.
•       Lead planning, design and assessment of all UNAVCO shared systems, IT strategy, planning and operational reviews.
•       Lead planning and budgeting efforts for current and upcoming program IT needs including research of appropriate software, hardware and resources; proposal development and presentations.
•       Identify shared project needs and provide appropriate infrastructure solutions.
•       Coordinate with proposal writers for IT planning and budgeting as necessary.
•       Maintain and implement policies and procedures in order to meet all cybersecurity requirements of the organization.
•       Monitor and maintain the data center in Boulder including the physical environment, Internet connectivity, and expansion planning.
•       Perform all network engineering tasks for the organization including the support of DNS, LDAP, NTP, routers, switches, firewalls, remote access, and wireless access.
•       Perform all system administrator duties for Program Support, the President’s Office, and Education and Outreach including helpdesk activities, server administration, and software development support.
•       Establish and maintain a documentation system for the organization and coordinate IT documentation efforts.
•       Primary responsibility for physical building security and access controls.
•       Responsible for maintaining compliance, including records retention and award monitoring aspects, with IT and IT security elements of awards.
•       Maintains record retention repository on behalf of UNAVCO.
•       Financial responsibility for common facility aspects related to IT and building security.
•       Support IT and audiovisual equipment needs for all departments in the organization for the UNAVCO classroom, boardroom, and other meeting activities including support for workshops, committee meetings, and colloquia.
•       Serve as a back-up systems administrator for other departments as needed.
•       Stay abreast of pertinent trends in IT and maintain contact with other IT professionals working in our community to promote synergies.
•       Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation of business.

Required Skills
•       Strong project management skills including project planning, budgeting, and implementation.
•       Excellent people technical leadership abilities
•       Excellent system administration skills in a UNIX server environment, preferably Solaris, Window Server experience is also desired.
•       Experience with datacenter management and network engineering.
•       Excellent written and oral communication skills and presentation abilities.
•       Working knowledge of industry best practices with regard to cybersecurity.
•       Experience with standard business IT services including email, web, calendaring, file services, directory management, and backups.
•       Experience with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
•       Is expected to have a working knowledge of federal grant requirements including procurement standards and allowable costs and be able to transfer that knowledge to others.
•       Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
Required Experience
•       Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field and at least eight years of relevant experience in a small to medium sized business preferably in a scientific or academic organization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 Preferred Education and Experience
•       Solomon business software support experience desired.
Physical Requirements
Ability to use fingers and repetitive motion on computing and communication devices; see well enough to use computer effectively; and both hear and speak effectively on phone.  Must be able to sit for sustained periods of time; the ability to see computer screen with detailed screen menu in low lighting conditions. 
Mental Requirements
Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions. Ability to organize and prioritize work schedules of others on short-term basis (longer than one month). Ability to make decisions which have moderate impact on the organization. Ability to compose letters, outlines, memoranda, and basic reports and/or to orally communicate technical information. Ability to compute, analyze and interpret numerical  and technical data for report purposes.
