Town Hall about a Subduction Zone Observatory

Subduction zones host Earth’s most spectacular geological phenomena (e.g.,
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, landslides), many of which have
global impacts on natural systems and society. Studies of these phenomena
and their impacts have clear linkages with other natural processes and
hazards, both onshore and offshore: climate and sea level change, coastal
erosion and sediment transport, gas hydrate emissions, land-sliding,
glacier evolution. This Town Hall explores how a multi-disciplinary,
international ‘Subduction Zone Observatory’ (SZO) could lead to significant
efficiencies, scientific advances, and reductions of their impacts on
humanity. Panelists who've been involved in SZO-like programs will share
their experiences and lead a discussion with the AGU community.
Panelists: Kerry Sieh, Jeff Freymueller, Susan Schwartz, Shuichi Kodaira,
Sergio Barrientos, Erik Hauri
