Hello all,
If you have been working on any aspect of the on-going eruption at Kilauea Volcano, please consider submitting an abstract for the following ‘Trending Topics’ session at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting
The 2018 eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/prelim.cgi/Session/54891 <https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/prelim.cgi/Session/54891>
In 2018 the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, ongoing since 1983, took a dramatic turn. Magma was diverted from Pu'u 'O'o, the long-standing site of eruption, and a series of new fissures opened further down the East Rift Zone, at Leilani Estates. Fast-moving lava flows from these fissures caused danger to life, inundation of property, and fumigation of the area with both vog (volcanic sulfate aerosol) and laze (steam laden with hydrochloric acid) as they entered the Pacific Ocean. During the increase in eruptive activity, a powerful earthquake occurred on the south flank of Kilauea, the largest there since 1975, and the lava level at the summit of the volcano decreased, causing a number of ash-rich explosions at the summit which prompted the temporary closure of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This session seeks a wide breadth of contributions focusing on the eruption itself, including magmatic and tectonic processes, volcanic and earthquake hazard, atmospheric chemistry, remote sensing, instrumentation, volcano-modeling; and the management and consequences of the eruption in terms of impact and risk mitigation.
