This is a reminder that the the registration deadline is fast approaching for the GeoPRISMS synthesis meeting on “Extensional Processes across Tectonic Settings and Timescales – Planning for the Next Decade”.
Please make sure to register by April 30th. We currently have 228 registered participants - don’t miss out!
As a reminder, this is a virtual NSF/GeoPRISMS sponsored workshop to be held from June 7-10, 2021. The meeting will bring together scientists from different career stages including early career scientists and students to discuss research related to rifts, rifted margins, backarcs, and spreading ridges.

The product of the workshop will be a white paper that will describe a community vision for comprehensive studies of extension of the lithosphere We envisage that the white paper will include a strategy for future NSF-funded research and encompass the fundamental science and facilities that underpin the economic, hazard, and human impacts that are associated with extensional systems.
The workshop will focus upon developing a new initiative for community-driven research coordination and will include:
Processes related to rifting, continental breakup, and seafloor spreading
The structure, stratigraphy, morphology, magmatic, and geodynamic processes of extensional systems
Societal implications of rifting: hazards, resources, coastal processes and response to sea level rise
The identification of potential synergistic partners (NASA, NOAA, USGS, DOE, industry, NGOs, international, others), and methods for leveraging existing databases and infrastructure
Planned themes of the workshop
Grand challenges in extensional tectonics
Structural manifestations of extension
Feedbacks between extension, magmatism, fluids, landscapes, rivers, oceans, and climate
Cross-disciplinary research challenges, needs, and opportunities for the next decade
Associating processes across disciplines
Feedbacks between extension and mantle processes
Sedimentary processes and environments in extensional systems
Ridges, rifts, and biosystems
Hazards and hazard mitigation in extensional systems
Engaging young scientists and creating opportunity
Connecting with society and advancing science literacy
