To the UNAVCO Community,

This fall, UNAVCO will hold its annual elections for the 2022 Board of
Directors and Nominating Committee. The current Nominating Committee is
soliciting nominations for potential candidates for both.

This year’s elections will occur under unique circumstances given that
UNAVCO and IRIS are planning to merge into the EarthScope Consortium,
Incorporated (ESCO), as was approved by the membership of both
organizations in 2020. The nominal timeline for this merger to be
completed is late 2022. Per our community approved ESCO bylaws, a 12-member
Board of Directors will be created for ESCO. The first ESCO board will be
composed of two existing Directors appointed by each of the IRIS and UNAVCO
Boards at the time of merger, respectively, and eight members who will be
elected by the community. Thus, while UNAVCO Directors elected in 2021 are
nominally elected for a three-year term, they would serve only one year
under this merger timeline but will be eligible for a one-year appointment
to the initial ESCO Board of Directors.

Nominations for this year’s elections will include members of the
seismology community for the UNAVCO Board and members of the geodesy
community for the IRIS Board, so that the 2022 Boards of each organization
can lead the process of aligning our activities even before the formal
merger date.

We encourage all members of the UNAVCO community to send self-nominations
or nominations of colleagues for the 2022 Board and/or Nominating Committee
to Rowena Lohman, Nominating Committee chair (rbl62 at; please cc
Jaime Magliocca (magliocca at The nomination deadline is
September 10, 2021. Details are given below.

Nominees for Board of Directors:

This year there are openings for:

One (1) Board Member who is affiliated with UNAVCO Member Institutions.
An institutional Board Member may be a Member Representative.

Two (2) Board Members-at-Large. The Board Member-at-Large may be or may
not be affiliated with a Member Institution, but cannot be a Member

Board Members normally serve a three-year term but members elected this
year will only serve a one-year term. They will be eligible for a one-year
appointment to the initial ESCO board of directors. Nominations of
candidates from minoritized groups are particularly encouraged.

Who is eligible to serve on the Board of Directors?

U.S. government employees may serve as “non-voting observers” on UNAVCO
committees, but may not serve on the UNAVCO Board. Some who work at
government labs (e.g., JPL) are employed by a university rather than the
government and thus are eligible to serve.

UNAVCO seeks a candidate pool that reflects the diversity of the UNAVCO
community. Thus, we request nominations that represent a diversity of
disciplinary, social, and institutional perspectives.

UNAVCO also seeks a board slate free of conflicts or apparent conflicts of
interest, in light of the fiduciary responsibility of the board. This is
best achieved by ensuring that board members are free of institutional
award or subaward relationships that create competition against UNAVCO, or
that may create an appearance of conflict or favoritism. Proposals and
awards that are aligned with UNAVCO’s purpose, for instance to enhance
facility support, community activities/workshops, and PI support, do not
constitute a conflict.

Nominees for UNAVCO Nominating Committee:

UNAVCO also seeks candidates for two Nominating Committee positions. This
committee has staggered two-year terms. U.S. government employees are
eligible to serve on the Nominating Committee.
